Syria: Ancient Christian Sites Damaged in Intense Fighting

Syria-HEAD-sm In Syria, more intense fighting this week as government forces stepped up their offensive on rebel-held territories, including an ancient Christian town along the Lebanese border, Maaloula. A number of historic Christian sites were significantly damaged in the fighting, including a Greek Orthodox monastery dating back to the fourth century. The Syrian conflict has driven millions from their homes, and the UN projects that Syrians will soon surpass Afghans as the world’s largest refugee group.
