Annual State Dept. Report on International Religious Freedom Highlights Blasphemy and Apostasy Laws

10-600

A new report from the State Department highlights concerns over blasphemy and apostasy laws that limit religious freedom and often impose death sentences for the accused. The report noted particular problems with blasphemy laws in Muslim countries, including Afghanistan, Pakistan, Sudan, and Saudi Arabia. It also noted discrimination against Christians in China and anti-Semitism in parts of Europe. According to the report, 24 percent of countries—where three-quarters of the world’s population live—have serious restrictions on religious freedom.
