Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby, leader of the worldwide Anglican Communion, is receiving praise for how he and his family have handled surprising new revelations about his background. A DNA test earlier this month determined that Welby’s biological father was not whisky salesman Gavin Welby as had been long thought. It was Sir Anthony Montague Browne, a former aide to Winston Churchill. The news came as a shock to both Welby and his 86-year-old mother. She released a statement admitting to what she described as a brief alcohol-fueled liaison just prior to her marriage to Welby. The archbishop said many people experience upheavals in their family life. He said his identity comes from his faith, not genetics.
