Tributes flooded in this week for Robert Bellah, the prominent sociologist of religion who died at the age of 86. The longtime professor at the University of California at Berkeley was widely respected for his study of the role of religion in public life and particularly America’s tradition of civil religion. Among his best known works was the influential “Habits of the Heart,” first published in 1985 and still required reading in numerous university programs.
