It was one year ago this week that Pope Benedict XVI shocked the world by announcing his resignation. He was the first pope in the modern era to resign. A year later, the retired pope is said to be in good spirits and at peace with his legacy. His personal secretary, Archbishop Georg Ganswein, said Benedict has no regrets about his frequently criticized papacy, and that he considers it his mission to support Pope Francis in prayer. Ganswein also said the two enjoy a good relationship and are frequently in touch.
