This week a bipartisan group of criminal justice experts called for sweeping reforms in the way the death penalty is carried out across the country. The report made 39 recommendations, including reducing the number of drugs used in lethal injections. This came two weeks after the botched execution in Oklahoma of a convicted murderer. Panel member and former Virginia attorney general Mark Earley, a Republican, said unless changes are made,“the administration of capital punishment is unjust, disproportionate and very likely unconstitutional.”
