Some evangelical groups said they would no longer participate in the Boy Scouts after the organization voted this week to allow openly gay members under the age of 18. In a secret ballot, 60 percent of those voting approved the change. Gay scout leaders are still banned. Faith groups sponsor about seventy percent of all scout troops. The Mormons, who sponsor the most among religious groups, did not oppose the new policy, and the Catholic Church said it would weigh the effects of the change. Other religious groups said the Boy Scouts didn’t go far enough. They had called for permitting gay scout leaders as well.
