Breakaway Group of Episcopal Churches in South Carolina Can Keep Historic Church Real Estate

A South Carolina court ruled this week that a breakaway group of Episcopal churches can keep property and assets worth half a billion dollars. The conservative Diocese of South Carolina severed ties with the Episcopal Church USA in 2012 over theological differences, including the ordination of gay clergy. That set off a legal battle over the control of real estate that includes historic churches dating back to the 17th century. The national church plans to appeal.
