Brigham Young University, the country’s preeminent Mormon university, announced a new policy regarding sexual assault. Students who report sexual assault will no longer face the possibility of punishment for honor code violations, such as drinking or extramarital sex. The change came after the school investigated one student for breaking the honor code after she reported being raped in her off-campus apartment. Other students confessed they had avoided telling the school about their experience with sexual assault out of fear of punishment and asked the university to change its policy.
