C. Everett Koop, 1916-2013

koop-obitDr. C. Everett Koop died this past week. He was a highly respected pediatric surgeon appointed by President Reagan in the early eighties to be surgeon general of the United States. Koop campaigned vigorously against smoking, with considerable success. He was an evangelical Presbyterian who surprised many by his vigorous efforts to address the HIV and AIDS epidemic through his advocacy of condom use and sex education. He was also a staunch opponent of abortion. Dr. Koop was 96 years old.
