Hindus around the world begin the 10-day festival of Ganesh Chaturthi (September 17), dedicated to the popular elephant-headed god, Lord Ganesha. Clay figures of Ganesha are often made and immersed in lakes and rivers.

The holiest time on the Jewish calendar begins at sundown on Sunday (September 13), with Rosh Hashanah, the New Year. The High Holidays end 10 days later with Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement (September 23).
