Vatican Doctrinal Chief Criticizes U.S. Nuns

Gerhard-Mueller-HEAD-smThe Vatican’s top official for doctrine, Cardinal Gerhard Mueller, this week renewed criticism of the largest umbrella group of American nuns. In 2012, the Vatican called for significant changes at the Leadership Conference of Women Religious, LCWR, which represents the majority of US nuns. Vatican officials accused the sisters of focusing too much on social justice issues and not enough on upholding traditional teachings. Some nuns had hoped relations would improve after the election of Pope Francis. But this week, Mueller said his office is still trying to help the LCWR, “rediscover their identity.” He stressed that his colleagues are “not misogynists.”
