There was an outcry this week after China won a seat on the United Nations Human Rights Council— this despite its own long record of human rights violations. Protesters outside the United Nations building in New York staged a mock beating to draw attention to China’s crackdowns in Tibet. China was among 14 countries elected by the U.N. General Assembly on the basis of “equitable geographical distribution.” Other countries admitted that also had spotty human rights records included Russia, Saudi Arabia, and Cuba.
