Chinese government-appointed officials in Tibet this week accused the Dalai Lama of “profaning Buddhism” by suggesting he may not be reincarnated after he dies. Tibetan Buddhism holds that the soul of a deceased senior lama is reincarnated into the body of a child. But the 79-year-old Dalai Lama has said his spiritual lineage may end if Tibet isn’t free from Chinese rule. China’s communist government maintains that it should have the right to approve any successor to the Dalai Lama and other top Tibetan Buddhist leaders.
