Dept. of Justice Finds Pattern of Civil Rights Violations by Baltimore Police Department

06-600

The Justice Department this week issued a scathing indictment of Baltimore’s Police Department (BPD) for bias against African Americans:

Vanita Gupta, Deputy Assistant US Attorney General: We conclude that there is reasonable cause to believe that BPD engages in a pattern or practice of conduct that violates the Constitution and federal anti-discrimination laws.

The civil rights investigation was launched in the aftermath of violent protests in Baltimore over the death of a 25-year-old black man, Freddie Gray, in police custody. City officials say they have already changed police procedures and will implement additional reforms.
