In Mecca, at the Grand Mosque, at least 87 worshippers were killed and more than 180 injured when an enormous construction crane crashed through the roof. Heavy winds were reported to have been the cause of the crane’s collapse. The Grand Mosque houses Islam’s holiest site, the Kaaba. The accident occurred just 10 days before Mecca’s annual hajj, or pilgrimage, which draws more than 2 million people a year.
Editor’s note (Sept. 14 update): The crane collapse killed at least 107 people and injured 238.
