Drought, Famine, Malnutrition Spark Warnings of Hunger across Africa

Ethiopia-600The El Nino weather phenomenon has caused drought and flooding across Africa, sparking warnings of famine. Ethiopia has been hardest hit with more than 400,000 children under five in the country expected to suffer from severe malnutrition this year. Another million will need treatment for moderate malnutrition. Charities such as Save the Children say emergency food aid will run out in April unless donors provide an additional $245 million. The United Nations also warned that hunger in neighboring South Sudan could reach unprecedented levels.
