European Court of Human Rights Upholds French Ban on Face-Covering Veils

veil-ban-sm-HEADThe European Court of Human Rights has upheld France’s ban on Islamic face-covering veils. France outlawed wearing full-face veils in public in 2010, prompting an outcry from Muslims who argued that wearing the veil was a religious obligation. This week the international court dismissed a case brought by a young Muslim woman. French officials have defended the ban, saying facial veils pose a security risk because they prevent individuals from being identified.
