As international leaders gathered in Switzerland to try to resolve the crisis in Syria, a wide range of religious groups called for decisive action to end the nearly three-year-old conflict. Pope Francis sent a delegation and renewed his call for an immediate ceasefire. The pope and other religious leaders urged creation of a “humanitarian corridor” inside Syria so food and medicine could be safely delivered. They also urged more help for Syrian refugees. The United Nations estimates more than eight million people have been displaced by the violence, some six million inside the country and almost two-and-a half-million who have fled to neighboring countries including Turkey, Lebanon, and Jordan.
