Germany’s government overwhelmingly adopted a resolution declaring the killings of Armenians by Ottoman Turks, beginning in 1915, were genocide. The Turkish government angrily denounced the vote, and President Recep Tayyip Erdogan recalled his ambassador to Germany for consultations. Eleven of the European Union’s 28 members have recognized the Armenian killings as genocide. Pope Francis has also referred to the killings as genocide, but President Obama has stopped short of using the word. Germany is home to an estimated three million people of Turkish descent.
