A prominent Muslim institution, Al-Azhar in Egypt, has rejected a new government program aimed at standardizing Friday sermons. The government body in Egypt that regulates mosques and houses of worship launched the standardized sermon initiative in an effort to try to filter out Muslim extremism. According to the plan, every week state-hired scholars will write the sermons. Scholars at Al-Azhar, however, say giving clerics pre-written sermons would limit religious freedom.
