A new count by the Associated Press suggests that Saudi Arabia has dramatically under-reported the number of people who died during a stampede at the hajj last month. According to AP, at least 1,453 pilgrims were killed, which would make it the deadliest event ever at the hajj. The official Saudi death toll remains at 769. AP is basing its number on reports from many of the countries that sent pilgrims to this year’s hajj. Saudi Arabia is coming under strong international criticism over how it has handled the tragedy.
