There was international outrage after Islamic State militants beheaded an 81-year-old Syrian antiquities scholar in the ancient city of Palmyra. Archaeologist Khaled al-Asaad was known for his longtime work to preserve Palmyra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. ISIS had charged him with apostasy, alleging he worked with idols. The head of UNESCO said al-Asaad’s work will live on, saying “they murdered a great man, but they will never silence history.”
