Church bells rang out at the National Cathedral and around the country Wednesday (August 28) to mark the moment 50 years ago when Martin Luther King delivered his “I have a dream” speech. At the Lincoln Memorial, several speakers recalled the role faith played in the March on Washington. In his remarks, President Obama urged the nation to do more to achieve the economic equality that was part of King’s vision:
President Obama: “For the men and women who gathered 50 years ago were not there in search of some abstract ideal. They were there seeking jobs as well as justice…To win that battle, to answer that call: this remains our great unfinished business.”
