Across the nation, yet again, outrage and mourning after another mass shooting. In the wake of the San Bernardino massacre, faith-based groups, including US Muslim groups, condemned the attack. Many religious organizations repeated calls for more gun control. Prayer vigils were held in several communities. Some political leaders also called for prayers, which generated a contentious debate on social media. Several activists were critical, saying action was needed, not prayer and platitudes. That criticism became known as “prayer shaming.” Others said they were offended by comments that seemed to denigrate prayer. Many faith leaders said they believed that prayer and action are inseparable.
