The highest religious body in the Modern Orthodox Jewish movement this week officially prohibited the ordination or hiring of female rabbis. The Rabbinical Council of America also prohibited the use of any titles that might imply a rabbinical role for women. In recent years, several women have been ordained at a Modern Orthodox school in New York, but given the title of “maharat” instead of rabbi. The council said this is not acceptable.
