Boxing legend and Muslim convert Muhammad Ali is being mourned across the nation. Ali died a week ago on Friday (June 3) after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease. Some 14,000 people attended a traditional Muslim funeral prayer service for him on Thursday (June 9), where his coffin was placed to face Mecca. Muslims typically bury their dead within 24 hours, but Islamic leaders said that’s not a strict rule. According to Muslim tradition, Ali’s body was washed, anointed, and wrapped in cloth within a day of his death. An interfaith memorial service for Ali was held on Friday (June 10).
