Papal Commission on Sex Abuse Reaffirms Bishops’ Responsibility to Report Abuse to Civil Authorities

papal-600During a Vatican-sponsored course for new bishops last year, a psychologist told clergy that the decision to report suspected sexual abuse should be up to victims and families. In response, the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors released this week a strongly worded statement. It said Catholic bishops have a moral and ethical responsibility to report suspected child sex abuse to the civil authorities.
