At the Vatican, Pope Francis celebrated his 77th birthday. He raised eyebrows earlier in the week with changes to an important Vatican committee that helps to select new bishops. Francis replaced two American cardinals known for their hardline conservative views on social issues. Among the new committee members was Washington, DC Cardinal Donald Wuerl, who is seen as more moderate. And in a surprising announcement, a leading gay rights magazine named Pope Francis as its Person of the Year. The Advocate said it selected him because of his softer rhetoric on homosexuality, especially compared to that of previous popes.
