A holy year is underway for the Roman Catholic Church. Pope Francis launched a Jubilee Year of Mercy by opening a special door to St. Peter’s Basilica. Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI made a rare appearance at the celebration. The Vatican’s holy door is opened only during jubilee years, which the church traditionally observes every 25 years. It’s only been 15 years since the last jubilee, but Francis designated one now because he said he believed the world needs mercy. Churches around the world, including the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, DC are also opening special doors for the year-long celebration.
