French President Francois Hollande met with Pope Francis at the Vatican to thank him for his support in the wake of recent attacks by Islamist militants. The two also discussed the persecution of Christians in the Middle East and the refugee crisis in Europe. This week Francis also named Bishop Kevin Farrell of Dallas to head a major new Vatican office. One of Farrell’s first tasks will be to follow up on the pontiff’s controversial “The Joy of Love” document that sparked intense debates about the role of divorced and remarried Catholics in the church. And last week, Francis made a surprise visit to a Catholic run center for women rescued from sexual slavery.
