Pope Francis and Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, the spiritual leader of Eastern Orthodox Christians, will be making a joint visit to Greece next week (April 16) to highlight Europe’s escalating migrant crisis. The Vatican said the April 16th visit will draw attention to the desperate situation faced by many migrants and refugees. The two leaders said they hope their visit will demonstrate a sense of solidarity and responsibility among all Christians. They will be traveling to the Greek island of Lesbos, which has become a major flashpoint in the crisis. Since the beginning of this year, more than 170,000 migrants from the Middle East, Asia, and Africa have made their way to Greece. Tens of thousands are stranded there after several other European nations closed their borders to refugees.
