Pope Reflects on Auschwitz, World Youth Day, Islam

06-600Pope Francis reflected on last week’s trip to Poland for World Youth Day where he joined hundreds of thousands of young people. Francis said that despite cultural differences, the youths were able to create a “mosaic of brotherhood.” The pontiff also spoke about his visit to the former death camp Auschwitz and said he had “felt the presence of all the souls that have passed there.” He compared the cruelty of the Holocaust to the pain and hatred experienced in today’s world.

Aboard the papal plane on his way back from Poland, the pontiff made some remarks about Islam. Francis said he does not believe Islam is inherently violent but that every religion has its “little group of fundamentalists.”
