Pope Welcomes Al-Azhar Imam for Vatican Visit

01-600This week (May 22), in an unprecedented visit, Pope Francis welcomed to the Vatican Sheikh Ahmed el-Tayeb, Grand Imam of the preeminent Al-Azhar mosque in Cairo. The meeting marked the resumption of dialogue between the two institutions. The relationship had frayed when Pope Benedict in 2011 demanded more protection for Christians in Egypt after a series of attacks. The two leaders met privately for 25 minutes in the pope’s library.
