Rare Mosaics Uncovered in Ancient Synagogue in Israel

03-600An archaeological team excavating a 5th-century synagogue near the Sea of Galilee has uncovered mosaics that appear to portray monumental events of antiquity. Said to be of “extremely high artistic quality,” one picture shows a fish swallowing one of the Pharaoh’s soldiers during the parting of the Red Sea. Another—said to be of Noah’s Ark—shows pairs of animals, here donkeys, as described in the Book of Genesis. Archaeologists said it was unusual to find such displays in an ancient synagogue, notwithstanding references to such events in the Hebrew Bible.
