At its annual meeting next week, the Southern Baptist Convention will consider whether to break ties with the Boy Scouts. The action comes in response to the scouts’ decision to allow gay scouts under the age of 18, while still banning gay scout leaders. About 70 percent of troops are sponsored by religious organizations. The two largest, the Mormons and the United Methodists, said they will remain involved in scouting. The National Catholic Committee on Scouting issued a statement saying the new policy does not conflict with Catholic teaching.
