Religious Leaders Respond to Trump Appointees

untitled-11-600Some conservative Christians are disappointed President-Elect Donald Trump nominated ExxonMobil CEO Rex Tillerson to be secretary of state. Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council said he was concerned because Tillerson helped convince the Boy Scouts of America admit gay youths when he led the organization from 2010 to 2012. ExxonMobil also contributes to Planned Parenthood.

Meanwhile, a diverse coalition of religious groups gathered in Washington this week to deliver a petition signed by 2,500 faith leaders raising concerns about other Trump appointees. The petition called on Trump to reject bigotry and appoint more tolerant advisers:

Rev. Jennifer Butler, CEO of Faith in Public Life: “These unprecedented, radical appointments threaten our very democracy and degrade our national values. People of color, immigrants, religious minorities, and those of us who stand with them are alarmed, and as people of faith we will stand in solidarity with our brothers and sisters.”

Among those gathered was Muslim Khizr Khan, the father of a US army captain killed in Iraq:

Khizr Khan: “My faith teaches that our creator never puts his creation in jeopardy without providing a solution. It is a matter of reaching out to him. I reached out, and I found the solution.”
