Religious leaders gathered at Washington National Cathedral to discuss the role of the white church in improving race relations in the country.
Rev. Amy Stapleton: We don’t get to just go to one anti-racism workshop and check the box and say we’re done. We don’t just get to elect one African American bishop in our denomination and say we’re done in our diversity. It’s got to be intentional in every moment, in every opportunity we have to call out oppression and racism when we see it.
Rev. Jim Wallis: I wanna see white Christians and white clergy joining with black community leaders and black clergy and talking to the sheriff and the police chiefs in their nation, in their community.
The forum was the first in a series of discussions at the church that will focus on racial reconciliation. The initiative was inspired by a debate surrounding the future of stained glass windows memorializing Confederate Generals Robert E. Lee and Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson at the Cathedral.
