A beloved but controversial relic has gone on rare public display. The Shroud of Turin is being exhibited through June 24th in Italy’s Turin Cathedral. Many believe it could be the burial cloth of Jesus. The linen contains a mysterious photonegative image of a bearded man with wounds similar to Gospel descriptions of Jesus’s when he was crucified. The shroud has generated much devotion, but also much debate. Some scholars consider it a medieval hoax. The Vatican takes no position on the shroud’s authenticity, but calls it a reminder of Jesus’s death and resurrection.
