President Obama outlined his vision for the nation in this week’s State of the Union address. Much of the speech focused on proposals to help working class families and what the president called “middle-class economics.” He also highlighted a host of social issues and cited America’s respect for human dignity:

President Obama: “That’s why we defend free speech and advocate for political prisoners and condemn the persecution of women or religious minorities or people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender. We do these things not only because they are the right thing to do, but because ultimately, they make us safer.”
