States Struggle with Bills Addressing Discrimination and Religious Liberty

03-Signing-600Georgia Governor Nathan Deal has vetoed a “religious liberty” bill that many argued discriminated against the gay community. The bill would have allowed people and businesses to deny services to gay people. Groups supporting the bill have vowed to continue to fight for the measure.

North Carolina has generated controversy with a new statewide anti-discrimination policy that excludes protections based on sexual orientation and gender identity. The bill overrules a new, local ordinance that provided such protections, including allowing transgender people to use bathrooms according to the gender they identify with.

Meanwhile, Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe vetoed a bill that would have prohibited state agencies from punishing religious organizations that discriminate against same-sex couples.
