Catholic bishops were among those condemning the sharp rise in xenophobic and racist attacks following Britain’s vote to leave the European Union. The British National Police Chiefs Council said they had received 85 complaints of hate crimes between June 23, the day the UK voted for Brexit, and June 26—a 57 percent increase in hate crime reports compared to the same period last month. Reports included incidents of vandalism and verbal abuse. Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby accused people of using the EU referendum as an excuse to vent hatred.
