Tennessee Counselors, Therapists Can Refuse to Treat Patients Based on “Sincerely Held Principles”

03-600Governor Bill Haslam of Tennessee has signed a bill that allows mental health counselors in private practice to turn away gay patients. Under the new law, therapists are allowed to justify their refusal to treat patients by citing their religious beliefs. The legislation shields the therapists from lawsuits and from being prosecuted or punished by a licensing authority.
