The versatile actor and singer Theodore Bikel died this week. He was best known for his portrayal of the poor Jewish milkman Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof.

Alongside his performances, Bikel was a strong advocate of all civil rights. He was 91 years old.

We spoke with Bikel in 2009 when he was touring as a one-man show called “Sholem Aleichem: Laughter Through Tears.”
