In Minnesota, the Roman Catholic archbishop of St. Paul and Minneapolis and his top aide resigned just days after their diocese was criminally charged with failing to protect children from a sexually abusive priest. Archbishop John Nienstedt said he was resigning to avoid being a distraction, although he said he had a “clear conscience.” For years, he has faced heavy criticism over his handling of a priest who was eventually sentenced to prison for sex crimes against children.
