United Methodist Church Divests from Banks in Israel

Methodist-600One of the largest Protestant denominations in the United States placed five Israeli banks on a list of companies that it will not invest in because of human rights violations. The pension board of the United Methodist Church said it boycotted the banks as part of an international effort to pressure Israel economically over the Palestinian issue. The banks help finance settlement construction in what the church considers illegally occupied Palestinian territories. Jewish leaders have criticized the actions, saying they do nothing to advance peace in the region.
