US Justice Department Opposes North Carolina “Bathroom Law”

04-600North Carolina is fighting to keep in place a new law that requires transgender people to use public restrooms that correspond with their biological sex. Last week, the US Justice Department said the law violates the civil rights of the transgender community. Federal officials also made it clear that billions of dollars in federal aid could be withheld if North Carolina didn’t abandon the legislation. In response, Gov. Pat McCrory sued the federal government, and the Justice Department quickly filed its own suit. Religious leaders are active on both sides of the debate.
