The legal fate of over a thousand newlywed same-sex couples in Utah is in limbo just weeks after a federal judge ruled they could marry. In December the judge overturned the state’s ban on gay marriage, which immediately led many same-sex couples to apply for marriage licenses. But the state appealed the judge’s ruling, and this week the U.S. Supreme Court issued a stay. The federal government says it will recognize the 1,300 weddings that already took place, while the state of Utah says it won’t.
