Animal rights groups called on Pope Francis this week to put an end to the practice of releasing doves from his window. Like his predecessors, Francis regularly releases the doves as a ceremonial sign of peace. But last week, two doves released from the papal apartment were immediately attacked by a seagull and a crow. The National Animal Protection Agency in Italy said the doves are defenseless. The group urged the Vatican to stop using the animals for “outdated traditions.”
