Pope Francis continues to insist on reforms in the Vatican bureaucracy, despite the release of two books based on leaked documents that detail the uphill battle he faces in doing that. The Italian journalists responsible for the books, which allege greed and financial misconduct, are currently under investigation by the Vatican. Also this week, Francis spoke before thousands of Italian bishops and laypeople at a meeting in Florence intended to outline a comprehensive vision for the future of the Roman Catholic Church. He emphasized that church teachings are always subject to change and meant to generate questions. There were also renewed concerns about Francis’s health. He has stumbled a few times recently, and last month an Italian newspaper reported that the pope was suffering from a benign brain tumor. The Vatican denied that and insisted the pontiff is in good health.
